Bristol commenced being a city over the Gloucestershire aspect from the Avon, but since it grew it extended over the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "which the town of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be individual from the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... Which it ought to be a county by by itself"
